EN ISO 11612

CLOTHING THAT PROTECTS AGAINST HEAT AND FLAME

EN ISO 11612 sets requirements for protective clothing that must limit flame spread and protect against various types of heat risk. These heat risks include convective heat, radiant heat, splashes of molten metal and/or contact heat. The standard describes which requirements the material must meet, how the garment must be designed and how the level of protection is indicated by code letter markings.

WHAT DOES EN ISO 11612 MEAN?

EN ISO 11612 is a standard for protective clothing used in environments where there is a risk of heat and flame. The standard sets requirements for both the material and the construction of the garment. The purpose of the flame-protection standard is for the garment to limit flame spread and provide a defined level of protection against various types of heat risk.

To provide sufficient protection, the protective clothing must cover the entire body, including neck, torso, arms and legs. This is achieved either with a full-coverage garment, such as a coverall, or with a two-piece system consisting of a jacket and trousers. In addition to full-coverage garments, accessories such as aprons and arm guards can also be certified in accordance with EN ISO 11612, provides that the accessory is used together with other flame-protective garments with the same or equivalent certification.

For a garment to be certified according to EN ISO 11612, the material must meet the requirement for limited flame spread, A1 – surface ignition. Flame spread is tested by holding a flame against the surface of the material for 10 seconds. When the flame is removed, the material must not continue to burn. Limited flame spread is the basic requirement for all further classification according to the standard. In addition, the material can also be tested for edge ignition and marked with A2.

Code letter Description
A1 or A1+A2 Requirement for limited flame spread; A1: Surface ignition, A2: Edge ignition

In addition to the requirement for limited flame spread, the protection is classified using code letters that show which type of heat exposure the garment protects against. Each letter is supplemented with a number that indicates the level of protection. The higher the number, the higher the protection.

Code letter Description
B (1-3) Protection against convective heat with open flame
C (1-4) Protection against radiant heat
D (1-3) Protection against splashes of molten aluminium
E (1-3) Protection against splashes of molten iron
F (1-3) Protection against contact heat

The standard also sets requirements for the construction of the garment. The garment must be designed so that it does not allow heat to pass through or increase the risk of injury. If the garment is marked with D and/or E (protection against molten metal), for example, pockets, seams and fastenings must be designed to prevent molten metal from getting trapped in them.
