SYMBOLS
Choosing the right protective clothing starts with understanding standards and certifications. On this page we list the symbols that are commonly found on our flame retardant garments. All of Tranemo’s protective clothing complies with Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and the latest European standards for PPE clothing (Personal Protective Equipment). Current certificates and declarations of conformity are found in our certificate list or under each product on the website
LIST OF SYMBOLS FOR FLAME RETARDANT CLOTHING
TRANEMO SKINSAFE™
MULTI-LAYER SYSTEM FOR EXTRA PROTECTION
Tranemo Skinsafe™ is a multi-layer system designed to protect the wearer’s skin against flame, heat and electric arc hazards.
All Tranemo Skinsafe™ systems are tested at a test institute according to EN 61482-2, APC, ELIM and EBT/ATPV. The tests are carried out on both fabrics and garments. The symbol is shown on garments that can be combined as part of a Skinsafe system.
Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX®
PRODUCTS TESTED FOR HARMFUL SUBSTANCES
Oeko-Tex® is an independent third-party certification process that ensures control of harmful or hazardous chemicals in clothing and textiles.
Almost all fabrics and accessories that Tranemo uses are tested and certified according to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, product class 2. Tranemo holds two OEKO-TEX certificates.
NO TO PFAS
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING WITHOUT ADDED PFAS
Since 2021, we have been part of the Swedish non-profit organisation ChemSecs ”No to PFAS” movement to influence how chemical legislation is implemented. An important initiative that we are proud to be a part of. We use the symbol to show which of our products are manufactured without PFAS.
CE MARKING
FOR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
The CE marking indicates that a notified body has EU type-approved the garment in accordance with the PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
All of Tranemo’s PPE garments are CE marked. Inside each garment there is a CE label showing which standards and classes the garment is approved for.
EN ISO 11612
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT PROTECTS AGAINST HEAT AND FLAME
The standard specifies protective clothing for work where there is a risk that garments come into contact with heat and flame and is the basic protection in all of Tranemo’s flame retardant garments. The protective garments are marked according to performance categories:
A - ignition, B - convective heat, C - radiant heat, D - molten aluminium, E - molten iron, F - contact heat.
EN 61482-2
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT PROTECTS AGAINST THERMAL HEAT FROM AN ELECTRIC ARC
The standard specifies protective clothing that is used where there is a risk of an electric arc. Tranemo’s protective garments are marked with APC, ELIM and ATPV/EBT. ELIM (Incident Energy Limit, cal/cm²) is the European official classification for electric arc and indicates how much energy the protective clothing can withstand without any risk of a second-degree burn.
EN 1149-5
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING WITH ELECTROSTATIC PROPERTIES
The standard specifies protective clothing that is used in explosive environments (i.e. ATEX) where
there is a risk that the garments create sparks which in turn can ignite explosive substances.
Antistatic clothing marked with EN 1149-5 is intended to be worn in ATEX zones 1 and 2 (gas, mist and vapour) as well as 20, 21 and 22 (dust).
EN ISO 11611
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT PROTECTS AGAINST WELDING OR SIMILAR WORK
The standard specifies protective clothing used for welding or similar processes where there is a risk of metal spatter, radiant heat from the welding arc, short-term contact with flame and live electrical conductors.
The standard is divided into class 1 (lower risk) and class 2 (higher risk), depending on the welding process and working environment.
EN 13034 Type PB [6]
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING THAT PROTECTS AGAINST LIQUID CHEMICALS
The standard specifies protective clothing used where there is a risk of exposure to light spray, liquid aerosols or splashes at low pressure/volume and where a complete barrier to liquid penetration is not required.
In accordance with the standard, the following groups of chemicals can be tested: acids, alkalis, aromatic hydrocarbons and alcohols.
EN ISO 14116
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AGAINST FLAME, LIMITED FLAME SPREAD
The standard is used for protective clothing that provides limited protection against brief or accidental contact with small flames, such as vests, T-shirts and socks. The standard has no dedicated symbol, but Tranemo has chosen to use a flame. The standard is divided into three classes, where index 3 provides the highest level of protection.
EN ISO 20471
HIGH VISIBILITY PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
The standard specifies protective clothing used in high-risk environments where the wearer must be visible during the day and at night.
The standard is divided into three classes, with class 3 offering the highest visibility. Protective garments in class 1 and 2 can be combined with other Tranemo high visibility garments as a set to achieve a combined class 3 system.
EN 17353
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING WITH ENHANCED VISIBILITY
The standard defines requirements for clothing designed to improve the visibility of people in environments with a medium risk level.
The standard covers three types depending on foreseeable working conditions.
A: Equipment for daylight.
B: Equipment for dark working conditions.
AB: Equipment for daylight and dark working conditions.
RIS-3279-TOM
THE BRITISH RAIL INDUSTRY HIGH-VISIBILITY STANDARD
The standard is a supplement to the high-visibility standard EN ISO 20471 and applies to work on or near British railways. To certify protective clothing according to RIS-3279-TOM, the garment must meet at least EN ISO 20471 class 2 and be fluorescent orange, with stricter colour requirements.
EN 342
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AGAINST COLD
The standard specifies the requirements for protective clothing used for work in cold environments.
The properties tested are: effective thermal insulation, air permeability and waterproofness. The tested garment is assessed as a 3-layer system together with underwear.
EN 343
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AGAINST RAIN
The standard specifies protective clothing used for work in rain, snow, fog and other wet conditions. Garments and seams are tested for water penetration (waterproofness) and water vapour resistance (breathability), where class 4 is the highest level of protection.
EN 13758-2
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AGAINST UV RADIATION
The standard specifies protective clothing that provides protection against UV radiation. All textiles provide a certain level of protection against UV radiation.
EN 13758-2 specifies that the UPF value (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is 40 or higher and that the garment protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.
EN ISO 15797
PROCESSES FOR INDUSTRIAL WASHING AND FINISHING OF PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
EN ISO 15797 is a wash test method for fabrics used in protective clothing that will be industrially laundered. Specific requirements are defined within each EN standard.
The PRO symbol indicates the number of washes that have been performed in a laboratory environment before the flame protection, high visibility and antistatic properties are tested.
