TRANEMO SKINSAFE™

RADIANT HEAT

PROTECTION AGAINST RADIANT HEAT

Tranemo Skinsafe™ is a multi-layer system designed to protect the wearer’s skin against several flame-retardant risks such as radiant heat. A chain is never stronger than its weakest link. Therefore, we recommend that you use inherent flame-retardant clothing all the way, from the inside out. In this way you avoid the risks of cotton that burns, polyester that melts, or metal that conducts electricity and heat to the skin.

How radiant heat protection is measured and classified

To examine how our flame-retardant fabrics withstand radiant heat, they are tested at accredited test institutes according to EN ISO 11612 code letter C, which measures the fabrics ability to block radiant heat. The test results provide an indication of how well the protective clothing withstands heat, as the tests are always carried out at room temperature. It is important to understand that the times stated below can be affected in practice by surrounding factors such as temperature and working environment.

The tests result in two values, RHTI (Radiant Heat Transfer Index) 12 and 24, which are measured in seconds;

  • Perception time (RHTI12) - the time it takes to sense the heat through the fabric, corresponding to a temperature increase of 12°C.
  • Radiant heat index (RHTI24) - the time it takes for a temperature of 24°C to occur.

Reaction time is the time the wearer has to react and move away from the heat source to avoid burn injury and can be calculated by subtracting RHTI12 from RHTI24.

What is the difference between EN ISO 11612 class C1 and C2?

In metallurgy, it is important to protect yourself against radiant heat to avoid heat stress. The test result EN ISO 11612 class C1 has a radiant heat index of 7–19 seconds and can be achieved with a single layer of flame-retardant clothing.

EN ISO 11612 class C2 has a radiant heat index of 20–49 seconds. To achieve C2, a clothing system of two or three layers of flame-retardant clothing is required.

The table below presents the results for our flame-retardant collections that are suitable for work in smelters and foundries.

TRANEMO SKINSAFE™ SYSTEM

Approved and tested systems

The Tranemo Skinsafe™ systems shown below have been tested at a test institute and represent only an example of tested garments. Garments manufactured in the same quality and with the same protection as those shown in the illustrations are also approved, for example women’s models, waist trousers and other equivalent products.

The quality of the garment is presented under the photo with quality number and name. All tests are performed on fabrics according to EN ISO 11612 code letter C.

TWO-LAYER SYSTEM

For work in metallurgy, it is appropriate to use flame-retardant base layers under the flame-retardant outer garments in order to achieve greater protection against radiant heat and thereby increase the chance of avoiding burn injuries in the event of an accident. The following clothing systems are examples of combinations that meet the requirements of EN ISO 11612 C2.
