EN 13758-2

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AGAINST UV RADIATION

EN 13758-2 specifies clothing that protects against the sun’s UV radiation. This standard sets the requirements for the material’s UV protection and for how much of the body the garment should cover.

WHAT DOES THE

EN 13758-2 STANDARD MEAN?

EN 13758-2 is a standard that sets requirements for clothing that protects against the sun’s UV radiation. For a garment to be certified according to the standard, the material must meet the minimum requirements for UV blocking and the garment must meet the requirements for body coverage.

The protection level is stated with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) which describes how much UV radiation (UVA and UVB) is blocked by the material.

According to the standard, the material should have a UPF value higher than 40 and let through less than 5% of UVA radiation. A UPF 40 material lets through at most 1/40 of the UV radiation, which corresponds to 2.5%. This means that the material blocks at least 97.5% of the UV radiation.

The most important factors for a material’s UV protection are fabric weight and fabric construction (knitted or woven material and its density). Protection applies only to the parts of the body covered by the garment and may decrease when the garment is worn, stretched or becomes wet.
